Back To Basics: How To Buy A Domain Name
A domain name is
the address name to which a blog or website is located with on the internet; or
it is simply that name you key into a web browser address bar in order to visit
a particular website.
And a
typical domain is mostly divided into two parts and 3 parts in some cases;
For example
the domain www.example.com is a typical
domain divided into two; the domain example
itself and the .com which is often
regarded as Top Level Domain (TLD)
In another
example if you have a domain like this; www.example.blogspot.org
we can easily say that it is
divided into 3 parts, where we have the domain example, sub-domain .blogspot
and TLD .org
One common
myth that online newbies hold about website domain is that all domain names
cost fortune to acquire.

But it will
be surprising to note that a domain can cost as little as $10/year and can also rise to hundreds and thousands of
Dollars/year as the case maybe; but we are not going into details here on
factors affecting domain prices.
But all we
want you to know is that a fresh dot com domain that have not been put to use
before will cost you somewhere between $12 to $20 per annum.
Today we are
going to carry you along on the basic and major way of buying a domain.
Buying just
a domain involves three basic steps, and they are
1. Picking an online domain registrar
(domain seller) and registration
2. Searching for domain availability
3. Processing payment
Breaking the processes further
·
Picking an online domain registrar
(domain seller) and registration – you need to locate a domain registrar if you want to buy a
domain, and there are lots of them out there both international and local
online domain registrar;
We have GoDadddy which many often tip as number
one domain registrar in the world today; others are 1and1, NameCheap, Domain King which is a local domain
registrar and host of others.
So if you have decided to
pick one, say you picked GoDaddy for example, then the next step is to visit
their site and register with them freely just the way you will register on any
other online platform.
·
Search for domain availability – The second step after locating and registering
on the domain registrar platform is to search for your domain availability.
All domain registrars on
their platform have a visible search bar where to search for availability of
any domain.
So what you need to do at this point
is to type in the domain name you want to buy in that search bar to check if it
is available because domain name always has to be a unique entity.
If the domain name is
available, you can then select it (add to cart) and go to the next step, but if
it is not available you will have to alter it or change it entirely and search
again until you get the one that suits you and that is available
·
Payment Processing – the final step here to acquiring
your available domain is to select the number of year(s) you want to pay for
and then proceed to payment;
Most domain registrars accept
varieties of payment processing methods, ranging from Debit/Credit cards,
PayPal, Bank Transfer, Western Union etc.
All you need to do is to select the
payment method that is suitable for you, feel in your necessary payment details,
and finalize your payment by confirming.
Note that on
the process of finalizing payment, you can apply coupon code if you have any in
order to slash down the price of the domain and also note that a compulsory ICANN
fee of $0.18/yr will always be included in your payments.
Hurray! You have
just succeeded in acquiring a domain name
