Can Apple really bar drivers from texting with its i-phone devices while driving?
Text
messaging while driving a car amongst others is one of the major forms of
distracted driving, which has culminated in high risk of vehicular accidents
over the years since the inception of mobile devices with text messaging
capabilities.
The question here is how easy or complex will such technology be for the iphone makers?

If they must achieve that, what it entails is that text messaging application on their devices will need to be completely lock out to drivers on the wheel to the extent that it will be impossible for drivers to un-lock it as they drive.
And again the technology will have to involve an interface or a form of sensor between their devices and the vehicle that will automatically detect a moving vehicle with driver on the wheel, so as to immediately enable the text messaging lock feature once the driver start moving the vehicle.
According to
a survey by the National Safety Council (NSC), over 18% of annual traffic
accidents were due to texting while driving, and another report has it that
sending out text messages while driving has 23 times more potential risk of
causing auto accident.
Maybe with
these statistics at hand, Apple is trying to come out real big time within its
own capacity in a bid to safeguard worldwide vehicular accidents arising from
drivers not concentrating enough on the wheel as a result of sending out text
messages while driving.
The mobile
phone giant has come out strongly on this one by filing a patent application
enabling them to bar drivers from sending out text messages when on the steering.

The more
reason such technology that will be involved should completely shot out text
messaging application to drivers on the wheel and make it impossible for them
to make use of it as they drive is because if that is not the case, there are
some obstinate drivers out there and if it is made in such a way that drivers
can un-lock it on their own while driving, those obstinate drivers will even struggle
their way to unlock it and send out their text messages even while on steering, thereby even exposing
them to more risk.
We are going
to sit back and watch how Apple will achieve this on the long run which in my
own opinion will be a most welcome development in an attempt to cut down
accidents being caused by distracted (texting) driving worldwide.
