We are going to be using this opportunity to enumerate and dissect some of these terminologies especially for the benefits of the android curious minded folks out there that are yet to come in terms with the full meanings of these terminologies.

Without further ado, here are the android terminologies that will definitely interest android fans and make them feel as android experts’ already;

1.      Android Rooting

Let it not surprise you that many have been hearing about rooting android devices but actually do not know what rooting is all about.

Android rooting is just a way of having root access to your mobile devices. In other words, with rooted android devices, you open new world of possibilities for your device by gaining a direct access to the entire device OS. You can manipulate the device just the way you want regardless of certain restrictions that are placed my manufacturers.

A typical example I always give is by saying that as hacking is to old Symbian devices, Jail breaking to iPhone devices, so is Rooting to android.

2.      Brick an Android device

Someone recently asked me “Is it good to brick your android?” I smiled and then explained it to him by telling him that bricking your android device simply means “Spoiling your phone”, and he was astounded.

In the android real sense, bricking of your devices means rendering it useless (dead), especially when it occurred on the process of trying to manipulate the system wrongfully.

For those that are not very good at following instructions, during android rooting processes, they could do it wrongly and end up bricking (destroying) their android devices. Therefore, one of the risks of android rooting is android bricking.

But the good thing here is that with certain smart technologies some bricked android devices can be revived (un-bricked).

3.      Flash Custom ROM

The word Flash here stands for Install, and then Custom ROM represent a modified version of android. Your android devices normally come with their own original ROM (Un-modified ROM), but you can always choose to Flash/install a custom ROM to suit some particular purposes.

4.      Unlock Bootloader

Bootloader is a program that determines which application will run in your phone start up process. Sometimes you will hear ‘Unlock Bootloader’ on your android device. This is done to allow you customize your android devices.

Different android devices have specific ways of unlocking their Bootloaders and some manufacturers often provide the methods on their sites for developers.

5.      Android Kernel

Android Kernel is based on Linux kernel which is the lowest form of software that communicates directly with device hardware. The Android Kernel differs from the Linux Kernel with the large number of additional drivers that enhances the smooth running of the Android OS on mobile platforms.

6.      Android SDK

Android SDK stands for Android Software Development Kit, which is an easy downloadable component that provides the Android Application Programming Interface (API) libraries and developer tools essential for building, testing and debugging apps for Android. You can download and install it on other non-Android OS.

7.      APK

APK stands for Android Application Package. It is the distinguished file extension or format used to distribute and install Android application on non-android and android devices.
