What Sizes of Devices are Qualified as Smartphones, Tablets and Phablets?
Smartphones,
tablets and phablets are common names you hear virtually on daily bases.
The last
decade has witness tremendous transformation from small screen and mostly
monochrome devices which can barely do any other thing apart from phone calls
and sending 160 character text messages to what are known today as
smart-devices with wider screen and full computer functionalities.
Somebody
walked up to me recently and asked me; ‘What device is qualified to be called
Phablet?’ and hence the idea behind this article was borne in order to
expatiate on the question for the benefit of those who might also be in similar
shoe with the asker.
Amongst the
names Smartphones, Tablet and Phablet, smartphone remains the most come name followed by tablet
and now we have phalbets.
In case you don’t
know, the name Phablet is a
technological name coined out from devices with screen sizes in between a smartphone and a tablet.
But now the
real question remains; what sizes of devices can you actually refer to as smartphone,
tablet and phablet?
Thought
there are no stipulated standard sizes for such question and that is attributed
to those devices but generic sizes that are now acceptable and attached to
those names are what we are adopting.
Before we
delve into those acceptable screen sizes, it is important to note that the
devices in smartphones, tablets and phablet can all qualified to be called mini-computers in many senses.

Generally, phones
(mini-computer) with screen-sizes ranging from 2.0inches to 5.5inches
are called smartphones.
Then the
next in higher screen sizes are the phalbets, and just as we have mentioned
that the phablet comes in between smartphone and tablet in sizes, so similar
devices with screen sizes above 5.5inches
to 6.9inches i.e. in between 5.5inches and 7.0inches are perfectly qualified as phablets.
Finally we
have the tablets which are largest in this category and their screen sizes
ranges from 7.0inches to 10.0inches inclusive and some tablets
might come with screens slightly larger than 10.0inches.
By now, I believe
you should be able to differentiate amongst smartphone, tablets and phablet in
their sizes.

nice post, Just helped me confam my thoughts
Hi Joshua,
DeleteYou know that technology is dynamic, those size ranges of tablets that you saw in the post was by known convention.
However that does not mean that the sizes are fixed to those size ranges alone you saw above.
Seeing some tablets these days with 12-17inches display should clearly spell out the dynamic nature of modern technology.
Maybe in the nearest future, other suitable name will be attributed to tablets of such sizes, just in similar way we now have name like Phablet.
Remember your home TV transitional period, when we have 12inches and 14inches monochrome TV as kings, but today, as we speak, tube TVs are quickly disappearing from the market, and all we have now are flat screens with 32 inches sizes and above, and they are still TVs, with names like LED TV, smart TV etc.
In other words, those larger than convention sized tablets that you mentioned are still qualified to be called tablet computers until we have it otherwise in closest future.
Maybe for now we should refer to them as slates
Thank you Joshua for coming by, and do have a lovely day ahead
