How To Install Windows OS On Your FreeDOS Laptop/Computer

FreeDOS is a complete free disc operating system intended mostly for running legacy software or for developing embedded software.

It is an entirely different operating system from Windows OS and thus not compatible with Windows based programs.

Unlike Windows OS, FreeDOS OS runs on a black screen interface on your computer and requires mostly commands input to carry out its operational instructions.

For the tech savvy individuals, like programmers that know what they want out of FreeDOS machines, they sometimes and deliberately opt for FreeDOS based systems for their works, but for those who are not techie, most times they end up acquiring FreeDOS computers in error, thinking they have gotten themselves the more common Windows based operating system machine.

And one of the reasons that many untechie folks out there end up acquiring FreeDOS computers unknowingly to them is because of the much reduced priced those systems are offered as against Windows preinstalled systems.

Now, if you are in the category of those that obtained a laptop computer erroneously and later found out that it came with FreeDOS based system against your need, I can assure you that it is not the end of the world and you don’t need to panic much as you can remedy it and install Windows OS if it is what you wanted.

In fact some folks will even prefer to buy FreeDOS and install the Window OS themselves so as to be able to customise the Windows installations to their taste unlike when it is preinstalled by the system manufacturers.

How do you now install Windows OS on your mistakenly bought FreeDOS laptop computer?

Follow the instruction below to install Window OS to your FreeDOS system.

At this point, it is presumed you already have on your flash drive a bootable or Windows installation image files of the Windows version that you want to install on your FreeDOS computer; and if that is the case then follow the remaining procedure below to install the Windows OS version at your disposal;

·     Restart your computer, on the process of coming on, quickly press the f2 key (some system it is the f10 key) on your keyboard to take you to the BIOS setup for your system.

·     Follow the onscreen instructions on the BIOS setup to navigate your way to the system boot sequence.

·     At the boot sequence, set your USB or FDD as the first and not DVD ROM nor hard drive

·     After that, you can save changes or use the f10 key to save and your system will restart

·     As the system is restarting, quickly press f9 key (in some system it is the f12 key) and it will take you to the boot priority

·     Now, here in the boot priority, click on the highlighted USB or FDD that shows up, because you have set this option up initially.

·     This time around, it will either show you to click on any button to boot from USB or you will see the F1

·     If the F1 shows up first, click on it and then click on any button now to boot from USB.

·     Since your flash drive contains the Windows OS installation media image, an easy Windows installation interface will come up

·     Follow it up to complete your Windows installations.

  1. hi, good day
your step by step information was helpful but i am still experiencing a booting problem
i used the f10 key to access the boot configuration, i shifted the "boot from USB" option up, saved the changes and restarted
the system still doesn't see the bootable flash drive.
