Dubious! MTN Secretly Withdraws Opt-Out Code For MTN VAS That Are Stealing Your Credit
Day in day
out I see different reasons why MTN and their likes will never stop receiving
different sanctions from NCC.
If it were
in some other countries, foreign company like MTN might have been shut down or
forced to pull out their businesses in the country for constantly playing on
the intelligence of their loyal subscribers and not providing efficient
services.
If you will remember,
some weeks back, MTN introduced easy self-service opt out code for
unsubscribing from MTN value added services that auto renew and deduct your credit
without you knowing in most instances.
When this
opt-out code service was introduced, lots of MTN subscribers were happy about
that and they immediately started unsubscribing from those services.

Must Read: Can Ntel SIM card work on 3G phones and on your normal MTN, Airtel, Glo and Etisalat modem?
But it seems
MTN on their part are not happy about that and since many people are now opting
out from such services, MTN must have felt that they can no longer deduct
airtime secretly from subscribers and guess what? They secretly withdrew the service.
For the past
days and till this moment that we are typing this, if you dial the required
code to see the content services that you are subscribed to and to opt out from
them, MTN will constantly display “System Error” to you.
Meaning that
with that, you can no longer unsubscribe easily from such services and
therefore giving MTN the opportunity they have been looking for to continue
deducting your credit balance daily, weekly or monthly.
You might be
wondering how we eventually come up with this assertion or some if you might
term it allegation, but MTN is the company that we have been using their
products and services for more than a decade now and we know to large extent
their modus operandi, especially when it comes to situations like this.
Ok, here is
another cogent proof; these days, when MTN want to withdraw some services, they
don’t normally make it open, and you only know when you constantly try to
subscribe to the service and you are getting error.
It was done in
similar way when MTN secretly withdrew their weekend data plan that offer 3GB
data for N300.
Recommended: Get MTN 6.5GB data only if your SIM is eligible
In this particular
case, when you dial the code *123*5#,
to see the content services that you are subscribed to and to opt out from them,
normally, you are to reply with 1,
but you will notice that replying with 1
will currently pop out a “System Error” message, and then how come that dialling
the same code *123*5# and replying
with other numbers, say 2 or 3 for other services doesn’t return
back error message and will directly take you to the option you chose.
This is a
clear indication that MTN has done something fishy here and that you can no
longer for now easily see the Value Added Services that you are subscribed to
and want to opt out from.
So, the most
likely option left to opt out from those services that are stealing your credit
is to take the long route of calling MTN service helpline and by requesting
them to unsubscribe you from the VAS packages.
You and I know
that calling their helpline to make request can be very discouraging and they
can keep you online waiting for ages and at the end they will still not speak
to you.
We are
putting up this to let you know how sometimes these telecom service providers
are maltreating their subscribers…this is an eye opener!
For now,
until MTN does otherwise by allowing the opt out code for Value Added Services
to go through again we will continue saying that this is a dubious intent by
the Telecom giant.

You're very right man. I think mtn has ulterior motive for stopping the code. I remember When my credit was being dedicated everyday by them, the code was my saving grace, courtesy your blog. But now it's no longer working.
