Do Not Tether Your Network Data To Any Other Device!
You read the
topic right and we are repeating it again and sounding clearer; do not tether
any of your current data from MTN, Airtel, Glo or Etisalat to any device!
And the
reason is simple; if have been following us here, you will remember when we
discussed data tethering as culprit to data zapping and that is just it.
If you love
your data bundle very well and you don’t want to start telling people stories
that touch the heart then guard your data jealously and do not attempt to
tether to any device, whether it is to other phone, PC or tablet, just don’t
tether and rather use all your data subscriptions directly on your phone or on
modem.
Since MTN,
Airtel, Glo and Etisalat recently revisited their data plans, data tethering of
any kind has been serious culprit to data zapping, and the funniest thing now
is that the data zapping while tethering have been tripled.
Our latest
experience is not what we want you to fall into and let’s quickly share it here
so you will understand the level of zapping that data tethering can cause you
now if you venture into it.
We recently subscribed to MTN 1GB for
N500 weekly data plan, to be precise, 2
days ago; and we were using it on the phone without any issue; and for the two
days running that we have been constantly surfing around the net with it, we have used 200MB out of the 1GB, leaving us
with 800MB.
Today, we exhausted the other data
plan on other SIM that we used solely on PC and we just decided to do little
tethering from our phone to PC in order to complete the little work at hand.
We were aware that data tethering now
zaps data but we decided to spend about 30minuites on the course of tethering
to PC, believing that no matter how the zapping goes that at least we will
still be left with up to 500MB since we are not downloading anything and that
it is just for short period of time.
And then we used the PC to only surf around
without any single form of download and even more so having deactivated all
auto-update features on our system but to our greatest surprise, after 30min of
surfing, we checked our data balance and we were left with only 10MB.
Immediately we knew that our data is
gone and that MTN will never restore such data and that even if you complain to
them, they will hinge it on data exhaustion due to usage.
It is
important to note here that it is not only MTN, but other networks also have these
current rates of data zapping when tethering.
A word is enough for the wise and he who has ear let him hear; do not tether your network data to any other device; use your data bundle subscriptions directly on your phone or on your PC with modem.

Am one of your adent reader but I don't agree with you on this one, and my reason is simple. For you to conclude that your data have been zapped you have to know or measure the exact volume of data used in the process of your tethering as against your data balance, and then conclude, the big question is how do you measure the exact data your device tethered or shared? There are so many apps out there to help you measure the exact volume of data you tethered one such example is (internet speed meter lite) available for free on play store, try it and give us feed back, I do tethering everyday from my phone to pc and I check my data before and after each session and compare it with my internet speed meter, the truth is that some data plan naturally zap data whether you tether or not.take not that some hidden process maybe running on your pc and eating up your data beside Windows update and antivirus updates..and do you knw that you can also measure the data your system consumed during the tethering session? You can also measure the data the other android device used also ... I calculate these every now and then...
ReplyDeleteGibeon you have spoken well and I enjoy your contribution.
DeleteBut we don't just write based on assumption or because it happened just once to us.
I implore you to read our article on data tethering a culprit to data zapping then you will see where we made more references and to other people that have witnessed same thing.
My team members here are also witnessing the same thing.
We have received calls from several persons that pertaining these and all testified that they were tethering their network.
Even without using any data monitor we can easily ascertain to reasonable extent the range of data we have consumed with our wealth of experience.
With the speed we achieved while using it, it will almost be impossible to even download up to 800mb of file within 20-30min if even were were downloading all through or updating something and it's very funny that we even disabled all our system auto updates to start with and did not even download a single file during this period.
How can you justify this same data that we have been using for the past 3days without tethering and have just used up only 200mb but immediately we tethered it today we exhausted 800mb in 30min?
We can go on and on, to prove to you that data tethering is indeed a culprit to data zapping.
Note we didn't say "the" but "a" meaning other things can also cause data zapping or just as you rightly said that some plans naturally zap data.
Let me stop here for now and do have a lovely day ahead
There is no room to upload image here else I would have shown you some snapshot from my internet speed meter lite data-monitor..I always discover that the exact MB I used is what is been deducted.. Even as I speak I be been tethering my dataplan with my PC for days now..
ReplyDeleteThe fact that you said the connection is so slow that one could hardly download 800MB file in 30minute's in itself suggests that perhaps there is a hidden downloading going on which might be unknown to you, what do get when downloads is ongoing and you try to stream data .? Delayed buffering right and perhaps slower web browsing speed..
I insist that you install a data usage monitor on the device doing the tethering only then can you accurately tell the data that have been consumed as against your available data and determine with an evidence to show that your data have been zapped or that your data usage have been manipulated...
Try a data monitor and prove me wrong..
You are right though, but that dosnt mean the writer isint right either, however I noticed and experienced similar issues while I was trying to update re published a post on GeeksNG , only to find out that my laptop running Windows 10 was always doing some background update, but then it would interest you to know that with this background update of a single download my data of over 800mb was wipped clean while the update only moved 3% which suggests a fowl play somewhere, you cant tell me 3% amounts to 800mb? Thats way out of it, so my guess ever since is mtn zaps my data much faster while tethering.
DeleteGeekNg what if you did not notice the background windows update running.u would have totally believed that your entire data have been zapped and thats the conclusion a whole lot of people reach too.
ReplyDeleteLet me ask again what is the total size in MB of the windows update package your pc was downloading in the background? I gues you are not sure right and what makes you now believe that with 800MB it Should go beyond 3% when u have no idea of the size of the entire package ..
Kindly take note of the following:
1. Windows update package can gulp up to 3GB of data in less than 2hours if you have a very fast internet connection .
2.when you use a modem to browse on your Pc the system sees the network connection via modem as a metered connection and as such restricts background app data or updates to avoid high data costs.
But once it gets connected to a wifi it sees it as an unlimited and unrestricted network connection and as such resume even previously paused app data or updates running it doesn't know if it was tethered from a smart phone or mifi all it knows is that it is connected to a WiFi sees all WiFi as unmetered connection.
3.these settings can be changed on all windows Pc i have done it several times too and any good Pc technician can do it for you so that it doesnt perform any background download on its own.
3.install a data usage monitor app and see the colume of data your connected devices are gulping up in realtime..
4.if you do not want to install a data usage monitor android phones comes with a powerful built in monitor its located within mobile data settings then data-usage-monitor through this you can even set the maximum volume of data you want to use within a given period you can set it to warn you or disconnect the data when you exceed that point ,
For the sake of experiment set it on 100MB check your data Balance now do your tethering again once your total usage hits 100MB you will get notified now go back and check your data balance again you ll see exactly 100MB gets deducted exept on a data plan that is know for zapping data and not necessarily because u did tetering..
5.the reason why you might feel your data might havw been zapped is because you could not give an account how you spent the 100MB and it got used up by your system based on your metered and unmeterd connection policy..
The summary is track your usage not by what you used it for but by the reported volume your tethering session used up as seen from your data usage monitor..
Gibeon you should know here that we have tethered from a phone to another phone and not only to PC and the zapping was also observed.
DeleteWe used Glo 3Gb for N1500 BB plan to tether from android phone to another android phone and zapping was highly noticed.
Thereafter we proceeded to use Airtel 3gb for 1k BB plan plan that we have been using since directly on android without zapping but when we tethered it to another android phone zapping took place.
If you have used the Airtel 3gb for 1k BB plan before you will know that it doesn't zap naturally.
Not long then an ardent follower of this blog called in and was complaining bitterly to me that how come that the Airtel 3gb BB plan for 1k finishes quick like this, that he just used it to tether to his PC for 3 days and that his 3gb was gone.
Then before we even put up this post yesterday was when we noticed what happened to us with the MTN 1gb for N500 data plan as we highlighted above.
The only thing that we want to totally agree with you here and that we didn't do is that it skipped our mind completely to use data monitor in all those our ordeals
And thats the only way you can know wat you consumed as against what you are charged..
ReplyDeleteI am not saying all of these to earn some cheap points I am a system Engineer by profession. I have experimenter these time and again the same metered and unmetered internet connection policy that happens on PC happens on smart phones too,
There is a setting that controls whether apps are updated automatically on a WiFi connection or not and you will be surprise to know that the default on most phones are set to auto update on WiFi by default..
Take into account too that these days there are some buggy Android apps or viruses that does app downloads on there own .it turns on WiFi network and even mobile data on its own even when the phone is on your pocket it can happen.
What do you think would happen if you tethered to this device, you might be measuring your usage by the download you initiated but unknown to you your usage is being shared..
Some data usage monitors can give you a full analysis of how your mobile data was used.
ranging them by apps that used the list to the most data it shows data used also during tethering.
If you have a good setting on your devices you would see that when you tether, your data usage would not count and would be still. But when you starts a browsing session or download it start counting... If all is well when you close the browser your data usage counter would stand still with tethering still on..
I ve been using Airtel 3GB for 1K and even the airtel 4GB for 1k(I guess you know about this plan) and glo 3GB for 1500 when they where the cheapest around the town I do tethering atleast 4hours each day yet my MB got deducted based on what I used I always monitor and track my data usage now I am using the 10GB for 2500 yet same applies
We definitely can't say that data zapping is based on sim.. Rather its based on the plan you subscribed
E.g glo sells 3GB data BB plan for 1500 this one doesn't zap data whereas the same glo 3GB plan for 1400 zaps data verified by tracking and monitoring my usage.the list of the plans goes on and on.
To avoid falling victim to this plans always do some research before subscribing and make sure to monitor your data usage...
Think about this
ReplyDeleteCan your Glo 3GB data be zapped just because you tethered to a Nokia-Asha-300 phone via WiFi? The answer is no and the reason is obvious
so its not tethering that causes the zapping but the consumption by the tethered device or by the type of data plan you subscribed.
Monitoring your usage let's you know what you use as against what You are charged..
LoL war of the bloggers.
ReplyDeletefirst and foremost, as tech bloggers I think you guys should use more tech terms than local language.
there is nothing called data zapping. the term for it is data throttling.
as for oga Gideon, he is just trying to prove he is smart. whether he likes it or not, the internet service provides throttle their data services whenever they can and at any slight opportunity
Gideon you mentioned 4gb for 1k. tell us abt this plan
ReplyDeleteHi Micasa the Airtel 4gb for 1k plan that he is talking about is for new airtel SIMs and you recharge with *555*PIN# to get 1gb bonus data before going ahead to subscribe for the 3gb for for 1k.
DeleteHmmm! Nobi small thing oh!..
ReplyDeleteTo some extent, Oga Gibeon is right. When you connect a device to a WiFi hotspot or router the device sees it as an unlimited source of data and tries to make maximum utilization by resuming all paused downloads as well as download all sort of junk to your PC since its presumed to be an unlimited and free source of data.
Whilst while using a modem, the same device based on how its been coded, assumes your data is capped and unlimited thereby wouldn't in any way want to exhaust it for you. A typical example is updating apps from play store. Under the settings, you will see an option allowing you to automatically update your apps once your device is connected to a wifi. Here WiFi na WiFi. Whether from phone or from heaven. Whether limited or unlimited the apps will start updating...
But then, Gibeon! You forgot the fact that you are in Nigeria where everything is possible (physical and spiritual lols). Where everything supperseeds logic.
What if I told you, that the very powerful data monitor app preinstalled on android device has failed me quite a few number of times? Whilst using the previous Airtel android data plans know to zap, zap and then zap again?
In my case, after Airtel zaps my data, the same data monitor will mysteriously come up with the same data usage report as given by Airtel. And you know what? I placed the sim on modem, and browsed with it for a while. And the foolish modem stat gave the same callous data report. But me wey dey browse, know say na lie lie report. So chill bro. MTN and co nogo kill us for this country. Not even Buhari's change can. Cheers!..
